AI Chatbot for a Small Business Website: Costs and Options
By the NexaCraft Digital team ·
Short answer: An AI chatbot for a small business website answers visitors' questions from your own content, captures leads and can book appointments, around the clock. Based on published pricing pages we checked in October 2026, do-it-yourself chatbot tools have free tiers and paid plans from roughly $25 to $150 a month. Some charge per AI conversation or per resolved question, at roughly $0.50 to $1 each. Done-for-you setups add a one-time setup fee. At NexaCraft Digital, Chat Starter is $149 setup (paid with the first month) plus $49 a month, month-to-month, for 500 chats, and Founding Clients pay $119 for setup. For founding AI setups, monthly fees stay at full price, with a 3-month minimum on the monthly plan; if you cancel earlier, you repay the $30 setup discount. Repayments are flat amounts, charged only after 7 days’ email notice.
Note: market prices in this article come from vendors' public pricing pages in October 2026 and change often. Check current pricing before you buy. NexaCraft Digital's own prices are on our AI Chatbot & Voice Agent page.
Four kinds of website chat
1. Rule-based (button) chatbots
These follow a fixed decision tree: "Are you looking for pricing, booking or support?" They're cheap and predictable, but they can't handle a question you didn't plan for, and visitors quickly notice.
2. AI chatbots trained on your content
An AI chatbot reads your website, FAQs, services and prices, then answers in plain language. Set up well, it handles the long tail of questions a button bot can't, and it can still follow rules such as "always ask for a phone number before booking."
3. Live chat with people
A person answers every chat. It's the most personal option, but someone has to be available. When nobody's online, live chat becomes a contact form.
4. Hybrid: AI first, human handoff
The AI answers instantly and hands the conversation to your team, or takes a message, when a visitor asks for a person or the question needs judgment. For most small businesses, this is the sweet spot.
Your options compared
| Option | Typical cost (US market) | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contact form only | Usually included with your website | Very low traffic | No instant answers; leads go cold while they wait |
| DIY AI chatbot tool | Free tiers; paid plans about $25–$150/month, sometimes plus per-conversation fees | Owners who want to set it up and tune it themselves | Message credits or per-resolution fees that grow with usage; branding removal can cost extra |
| Help-desk platform with AI add-on | Per-seat fees plus about $1 per AI-resolved conversation | Teams that already run support through a help desk | Costs rise as the AI succeeds, because you pay per resolution |
| Done-for-you AI chatbot | Setup fee (paid with the first month) plus a monthly plan | Businesses that want it built, trained, tested and maintained for them | Get a written scope and know what the monthly plan includes |
The hidden costs to check
- Usage units. "500 messages" is not the same as "500 chats." One conversation can use many messages or credits.
- Per-resolution pricing. Paying per answered question sounds fair, but a busy month can cost much more than you budgeted.
- Seats. Help-desk tools often charge per team member who can see or reply to chats.
- Your time. A DIY bot is only as good as the content and rules you give it. Plan time to write FAQs, test answers and update prices.
- Integrations. Calendar booking, CRM sync and Messenger or Instagram inboxes are often on higher tiers.
- Site speed. A heavy chat widget can slow your pages. Ask whether the script loads after the page so it doesn't hurt your Core Web Vitals.
What a good small-business chatbot should do
- Answer from approved content only. It should say "let me get someone to confirm that" rather than invent a price or policy.
- Capture the lead early. Ask for a name and the best way to reach the visitor, then alert your team by email right away.
- Book, or hand off cleanly. Book on your calendar where possible, or pass a summary to a person.
- Say that it's AI. California's bot disclosure law (SB 1001, in effect since July 2019) makes it unlawful to use a bot that misleads people in California about being a bot in order to encourage a sale. A clear "I'm an AI assistant" avoids the issue and builds trust.
- Keep sensitive data out. Clinics, law firms and financial businesses should keep chat to general questions and booking, and link to a proper secure intake system for anything sensitive.
- Be easy to use. It should work on phones, with a keyboard and with screen readers, and be easy to close.
How to judge whether it's working
You don't need industry benchmarks to judge a chatbot. Track your own numbers for a month before and after launch:
- Leads captured through chat, and how many came in after hours.
- Appointments booked or callback requests taken.
- Questions the bot couldn't answer. Each one is a gap to fill in your content.
- Time your team saves on repeat questions.
Chatbot or AI receptionist?
A chatbot handles visitors who are already on your website. An AI receptionist handles people who call. If most of your leads phone you, start with voice; our guide to AI receptionist costs and options explains how it works. If you get both, a Chat + Voice bundle runs both from one dashboard.

Frequently asked questions
How much does an AI chatbot cost for a small business website?
Based on published pricing pages in October 2026, DIY tools have free tiers and paid plans from roughly $25 to $150 a month, sometimes plus per-conversation fees. NexaCraft Digital's Chat Starter is $149 setup (paid with the first month) plus $49 a month, month-to-month, for 500 chats, or $119 setup for Founding Clients through January 17, 2027. For founding AI setups, monthly fees stay at full price, with a 3-month minimum on the monthly plan; if you cancel earlier, you repay the $30 setup discount. Repayments are flat amounts, charged only after 7 days’ email notice.
What's the difference between a chatbot and live chat?
A chatbot answers automatically, day and night. Live chat needs a person online. A hybrid setup lets the AI answer first and hand off to your team or take a message when needed.
Can an AI chatbot make up answers?
It can if it isn't set up carefully. A good chatbot answers only from content you approve and passes anything it can't confirm, such as custom pricing, to a person.
Does a chatbot slow down my website?
A heavy widget can. Ask for a chat script that loads after the page content so it doesn't hurt your Core Web Vitals.
Do I have to tell visitors they're chatting with a bot?
It's best practice everywhere, and California's bot disclosure law (SB 1001) targets bots that mislead people about being a bot to encourage a sale. Our chatbots say they are AI assistants. This isn't legal advice.
Can the chatbot speak Spanish?
Yes. NexaCraft Digital's Chat Business plan includes English and Spanish, and Chat Pro supports 10+ languages.
Should I get a chatbot or an AI receptionist?
Choose based on where your leads come from. A chatbot handles website visitors; an AI receptionist answers phone calls. Chat + Voice bundles cover both from one dashboard.
